A young mother of four writes of camping with kids in their beautiful country of South Africa.

Our family has always lived life in a BIG way. This is mainly due to my husband’s outlook on trying as much as he can before he shuffles off this mortal coil!
We are a camping 4 X 4 Land Rover-mad family. Our first child was rocked to sleep many times in her car seat and we negotiated the rocks on Gansbaai. (Goose Bay – Southern Cape South Africa)
Our second child had his first camping trip at 6 weeks old…now with 4 children we still camp for 3 weeks every year. We have the benefit of going to campsites out of season when we can enjoy the space and freedom for our family. Our last camping trip to Witsands (White Sands) outside George in the Western Cape ended in a disaster of a flash flood…but we will return!

We knew we were going to homeschool when our first child was 2…she is now a young lady of 12. These last ten years have been a delightful time of discovery and learning.
We can make the most of our homeschooling lifestyle as we learn about new parts of our country together, not from dry boring textbooks…but from the life and people around us. When our children were very young we often visited the Natal coast and stayed in the lush tropical camp sites like Zinkwazi, St Lucia and Cape Vidal. There we studied the mangrove swamps, hippos, crocodiles and the tidal system.
What better way to let life and family relations be the first teacher and books the second. I wonder if this sounds tempting to other camping/RV/4X4 fans….you can read further on my webpage about different programs and philosophies and how to get started on a homeschooling lifestyle…take a look at Homeschool Curriculum For Life.
Happy camping!
